    Dopamine is not a pleasure chemical - it is an anticipation chemical. That is precisely why feeds, likes, and notifications are so hard to resist.

    Popular writing often calls dopamine the 'pleasure chemical.' Neuroscience tells a more interesting story. Dopamine is released most strongly in anticipation of a reward - not when the reward arrives. Social media product teams have built their entire business model around that distinction.

    Variable rewards: the slot-machine mechanic

    Behavioral psychologist B.F. Skinner showed in the 1950s that a reward delivered on an unpredictable schedule produces more compulsive behavior than a reward delivered every time. Pull the lever, sometimes you win, sometimes you don't - the uncertainty itself becomes the hook. Pull-to-refresh, the like counter, and the algorithmic feed are direct applications of that principle.

    Why teens are more vulnerable

    The adolescent brain has a fully developed dopamine reward system but an underdeveloped prefrontal cortex - the region that handles impulse control and long-term planning. The result is a brain wired to seek novelty and reward, with weaker brakes. That mismatch is the biological reason teens are more susceptible to compulsive social media use than adults.

    • Endless feeds remove the natural completion cue that lets the brain disengage
    • Streaks and progress bars piggyback on goal-pursuit circuits
    • Likes and comments arrive on a delay - classic intermittent reinforcement

    Tolerance, withdrawal, and the dimmer switch

    Repeated dopamine surges cause the brain to downregulate its dopamine receptors - a process called tolerance. Activities that used to feel rewarding (a walk, a conversation, a book) start to feel flat. The user needs more of the original stimulus to feel the same baseline. This is the same neurobiological mechanism implicated in substance addiction.
